DMU/DMC 200-340 P/U/FD portal series
The large portal milling machines of the DMU/DMC 200-340 P/U/FD series are characterized by a proven portal design with a vertically driven cross beam on both sides and an inherently rigid FEM-optimized machine bed. They are versatile and suitable for series production of large and heavy workpieces that can be machined 5-axis in one setup.

The design of the DMU/DMC 200-300 series is based on the portal design, in which a crossbeam hydraulic counterbalance is driven on both sides by liquid-cooled ball screw drives and feed motors. This ensures optimum power transmission with maximum rigidity. No foundation is required for the installation of the machines, and due to their modular design with 3-point support, set-up is relatively quick.
The large milling machines DMU 200 P /DMC 200 U
Despite its compact design, the DMU 200 P has generous traverse paths of 1,800 x 2,000 x 1,100 mm and is designed to process workpieces weighing up to 5 tons (optionally 8 tons). An automatic swivel milling head and the NC-controlled B axis enable dynamic 5-axis complete machining as well as simultaneous 5-axis milling in just one setup. Rapid traverses of up to 60 m/min and a tool change with double gripper ensure fast machining times with maximum precision. In the standard version, the tool changer has a magazine with 60 tool positions.
In contrast to the DMU 200 P, the DMC 200 U has an automatic pallet changing system for higher productivity.
The Giga Milling Machines: DMU 340 P /DMC 340 U
With the DMU 340 P and DMC 340 U models, Deckel Maho opened up a new dimension in the production of large parts in the early 2000s.The 340 models are based on the same gantry design principle as the 200 models, but have larger travels of 2,800 x 3,400 x 1,600 mm. Workpieces weighing up to 16 tons (optionally up to 20 tons) can be completely machined on five sides in the 16 m³ work envelope of these „gigamills“, making these machines particularly suitable for large-scale producers in mechanical and plant engineering as well as in aircraft construction. In addition, the DMU 340 P can be individually adapted to various requirements with different spindles and options for the milling head.
With its NC swivel milling head for universal 5-axis machining and its 44 kW spindle, which is equipped for speeds of up to 10 000 min-1 and for a torque of 288 Nm, the machine set new standards in the field of heavy machining when it was launched on the market, even in its standard version. Alternatively, a controlled gear motor with a torque of 1500 Nm and speeds of up to 8000 min-1 was offered as a high-end solution.
In contrast to the DMU 340 P, the DMC 340 U includes a pallet changing system expandable up to four pallets for production-increasing series manufacturing.
Control system
Depending on requirements and demands, the machines of the 200/300 series can be operated either with the Heidenhain iTNC 530, the MillPlus iT or the Siemens 840 D.

The DMU/DMC 200-340 P/U from today’s perspective
Since their market launch in the early 2000s, the DMU/DMC machines in the various P/U/FD versions have proven their worth in a large number of manufacturing companies. Whether in toolmaking, moldmaking, automotive or mechanical engineering, in the aerospace industry: With highly innovative technical features at the time, these large milling machines have enabled a large number of companies to achieve enormous increases in efficiency. And even today, the machines of this series still play to their strengths in many companies when it comes to the series production of large parts.
Due to their high precision, great flexibility and long service life, the machines of the 200/300 series still play in the first league of universal machining centers two decades after their introduction. Due to their widespread use, the DMU 200 P and DMC 200 U machines in particular are found relatively frequently on the second-hand market and represent an attractive and economical alternative to purchasing a new machine.
