DMG DMU P / FD and DMC U / FD duoBLOCK® Series
The machine tools of the extensive DMU/DMC duoBLOCK® series from DMG offer 5-axis machining of simple to high-tech workpieces with maximum accuracy and guarantee maximum precision with maximum dynamics thanks to their highly stable design. With the duoBLOCK® concept, which represents a particularly rigid design, the machines are also ideally suited for heavy-duty machining tasks. DMG MORI has been optimizing these high-performance machines for many years with the continuous further development of the proven series and always adapts them to the latest technological standards with each new machine generation.

The duoBLOCK® Machine Design
The duoBLOCK® concept is characterized by a particularly stable design that enables maximum precision and performance. The machine structure consists of two blocks, the machines are equipped with a swivel spindle and a table with a rotary axis and enable stable machining of even heavy, medium-sized to large workpieces. Thanks to their high rigidity, the duoBLOCK® machines can also handle the machining of difficult-to-cut materials that require a high cutting capacity. Large operating doors to the cubic work area and unrestricted crane loading from above for workpieces weighing up to 4,000 kg from above to above the table center (DMU machines) or above the pallet center (DMC machines) enable fast and ergonomic setup and set-up.
The high static mass and the low mass of the moving components made of GGG60 ensure maximum machine dynamics with moderate energy requirements. Furthermore, 30° steep cabin slopes in the work area and a one-piece cover in the chip fall area ensure optimum chip flow.

DMU / DMC duoBLOCK® Machine Versions
The DMG duoBLOCK® series initially comprises the following model variants:
- P Models:
DMU 60 P, DMU 80 P, DMU 90 P, DMU 100 P, DMU 125 P, DMU 160 P sowie die DMC 60 U - U Models:
DMC 80 U, DMC 90 U, DMC 100 U, DMC 125 U, DMC 160 U
The “P” in the designation stands for “portal design” and the “U” for “universal”. The DMC machines are equipped with a pallet changer for workpieces weighing up to 3,000 kg, enabling set-up to be carried out parallel to production. The RS5 and RS10 rotary pallet storage systems with 5 or 10 additional pallets are also available as an optional extension for the DMC models.
For the various models there is also the corresponding milling-turning version, recognizable by the “FD” in the model name, e.g. E.g.: “DMG DMU 80 FD”. With the FD machines, in addition to drilling and milling operations, lathing operations can also be carried out in the same clamping.
As is usual with DMG, the model designations provide information about the length of the X-axis, e.g. in the 60-series models this has a length of 600 mm. As the machine size increases, the other axes are also larger.

Wide Range of Spindles for every Application
The DMG series DMU P / FD and DMC U / FD duoBLOCK® milling and turning machines can be operated with a whole range of spindles suitable for different applications and requirements. Some of the most commonly used spindles for this machine series are:
- SK40
The SK40 is a widely used tool holder that is suitable for a variety of machining tasks. They offer a good balance between stability and flexibility, are ideal for medium to heavy duty cutting and offer good performance for many applications. Typical performance data for SK40 spindles can be, for example, 15,000 rpm at 35 kW and a torque of 200 Nm. - HSK-A63
The HSK-A63 was developed for high-speed machining at high speeds. It offers high rigidity and accuracy and is particularly suitable for applications that require high precision and surface quality, such as in tool and mold making. Typical performance data for HSK-A63 spindles can be 18,000 to 24,000 rpm with power between 20 and 40 kW and a torque of around 150 to 250 Nm. - HSK-A100
These high-performance milling spindles are designed for high performance at relatively low speeds, ideal for machining hard materials. Typical performance data is 52 kW at 10,000 rpm. - PowerMASTER 1000
This spindle offers high torques and is suitable for heavy-duty machining. Typical performance specifications are 1,000 Nm torque at a maximum speed of 8,000 rpm. - PowerMASTER 1200
Also suitable for heavy-duty machining, this spindle offers even higher torques of up to 1,200 Nm at a maximum speed of 8,000 rpm. - SpeedMASTER 20000
Designed for high-speed machining, this spindle offers a maximum speed of 20,000 rpm with an output of approx. 35 kW. - SpeedMASTER 30000
With a maximum speed of 30,000 rpm, this spindle is designed for ultra-high-speed machining. - TorqueMASTER spindles
The spindles specially developed for turn-mill centers offer high torques at comparatively low speeds, e.g. 1,000 Nm at a maximum speed of 6,300 rpm.
The selection of the right spindle depends on the specific machining requirements, such as material, desired surface quality, machining speed and the type of machining operations (milling, drilling, lathing, etc.).

Control units for the DMG duoBLOCK® series
Typical controls for machines in the DMG duoBLOCK® series include the SIEMENS Sinumerik 840 D solutionline, Sinumerik One, Heidenhain TNC 640 / TNC 7, Heidenhain iTNC 530 or the Heidenhain MillPlus iT V600. Older machines are often still equipped with the DMG ERGOline® Control control unit, while newer models are already equipped with the CELOS or CELOS X app-based control and operating platform.

Special Applications of the DMG duoBLOCK® Series
LASERTEC Shape: 5-Axis Milling and Laser Surface Structuring
The flexible connection of a fiber laser scan head to the spindle head via the HSK interface enables 5-axis milling and laser surface structuring of moulded components in a single clamping operation on the DMU/DMC duoBLOCK® series machines. This allows, for example, the pre-machining of molds for automotive fittings, household appliances, cell phone and camera housings, shoe soles and other plastic injection molds, which are then given a precise, customer-specific and technically high-quality visible surface through laser structuring.
ULTRASONIC: Processing of hard Materials
The ULTRASONIC HSK actuator system of the DMG duoBLOCK® machines combines ULTRASONIC hard machining of advanced materials (such as lightweight structures made of Zerodur, carbide stamping tools and ceramic wear parts for the pump, textile and fittings industries) with conventional 5-axis milling via an HSK-63/100 interface. The conventional tool rotation is inductively superimposed by an additional ULTRASONIC oscillation in the axial direction.
Buying used DMG DMU P / DMC U duoBLOCK®
The powerful, highly stable 5-axis milling machines from the duoBLOCK® series are often found on the used market due to their widespread use. In order to select the machine that is best suited to your own requirements from the many different models in the series, it is often advisable to contact an experienced machine dealer who can provide comprehensive advice and offer exactly the right machine.
