DMG DMU 50 / 70 series
The compact universal milling machines of the DMG DMU 50 / 70 series offer an inexpensive entry into 5-axis machining of simple to complex components and have long proven themselves in many companies, especially in the production of individual parts and small series. With powerful milling performance, modern CNC control technology and a small footprint, they offer innovative DMG MORI machine construction technology at an affordable price.

Design of the DMU 50 / DMU 70
The cross-slide design of the DMU 50 / DMU 70 with ribbed cast components and a machine base made of mineral casting (polymer concrete) ensure maximum stability with high-precision machining. Various table options such as the fixed table, the manual panning and rotary table as well as the NC-panning and rotary table with digital drives, hydraulic table clamping and large bearing diameters in both rotary axes ensure great flexibility for a wide range of applications. Two additional axes (B and C axes) are available with the NC-panning and rotary table, which enables the production of complex workpieces with a maximum of two clamping operations. The generous swivel range of up to 115° (-5° / +110°) also allows undercuts of up to 20° to be made. Due to the great flexibility of the digitally driven NC-panning and rotary table, this option can be found on most of the machines supplied.

DMG DMU 70 with NC-panning and rotary table – larger work area than the DMU 50
The machine design of the DMU 50/70 series ensures optimum access to the large work area for the comparatively small machine dimensions as well as a free chip flow. The linear guides with wide guideway spacing as well as the drives, tools and measuring systems are easily accessible and positioned separately from the work area, which prevents contamination from chips.
Technical data of the DMU 50 / DMU 70
The travel distances of 500/450/400 mm (DMU 50) and 750/600/520 mm (DMU 70) are sufficiently dimensioned to process medium-sized workpieces. With a torque of 100 Nm and a drive power of 18.9 kW (at 40% duty cycle), the machines have sufficient power, although the maximum feed force of 6 kN for the DMU 70 is slightly higher than that of the DMU 50 at 4.8 kN. All axes and the main spindle have digital drives, rapid traverse speeds of up to 24 m/min are possible and the optional milling spindle rotates at up to 14,000 rpm.
The tool changers of the DMU 50 / DMU 70 with an optional 16 places in pick-up mode or 30 places with a fast double gripper enable the tool magazines to be loaded during machining. Even complex workpieces with different machining operations can be produced in a maximum of two set-ups. When using HSK tool holders in conjunction with 30 tool positions, automatic taper cleaning is also carried out.
CNC control of the DMG DMU 50 / 70
The tried-and-tested DMG ERGOline® Control with the 19″ screen offers good reading comfort, enables the integration of additional DMG SOFTkeys® and ensures efficient working. Instead of a key switch, the intelligent DMG SMARTkey® with chip is used, which can be used to call up various machine operating modes and manage personal access authorizations.
With controls such as the Heidenhain iTNC 530, MillPlus iT or Siemens 840D solutionline, proven and powerful 3D controls with fast processors and a high level of user-friendliness are available for the DMU 50 / DMU 70. The user interface of the Heidenhain iTNC 530 can be switched between smarT.NC and classic TNC plain text, and Windows applications can also be conveniently integrated on an optional dual processor system. This is also the case with the Heidenhain MillPlus iT, which also offers the advantage of geometry and temperature compensation. The Siemens 840D solutionline also enables programs to be created and edited quickly, includes a wide range of cycles with sophisticated tool handling and offers the option of pre-simulation.

Areas of application for the DMU 50 / DMU 70 series
The machine concept and the technical features of the compact DMG DMU 50 / DMU 70 machines clearly focus on universality. With comparatively low acquisition costs compared to larger milling machines, the machines in the series also offer an affordable entry into 5-axis milling and enable efficient production of individual parts and small batches with maximum precision. The “small” universal milling machines from DMG therefore serve a wide range of applications in the workshop, laboratory and training sectors as well as in tool and mold making.
Buying used DMG DMG DMU 50 / DMU 70
The flexible universal milling machines from the DMG DMU 50 / DMU 70 series can be found relatively frequently on the used market due to their widespread use and are extremely attractive as used machines for small and medium-sized companies as well as larger companies. Particularly in the version with the digitally driven swivel rotary table, a used DMU 50 or DMU 70 provides everything that is necessary for modern and efficient 5-axis machining.
