Company history of DMG MORI AG

DMG MORI AG is a leading global manufacturer of CNC-controlled machine tools. Its broad portfolio includes innovative CNC machines for various applications, including turning and milling machines as well as automation and software solutions. As a „Global One Company“, DMG MORI combines extensive expertise in the field of machine tool manufacturing.

From locksmith’s shop to machine factory

The history of DMG Mori Aktiengesellschaft dates back to 1870, when the master locksmith Friedrich Gildemeister founded the machine tool factory „Gildemeister & Comp.“ in Bielefeld. Originally started as a small locksmith’s shop, the company developed over time into a major manufacturer of machine tools and was transformed into a stock corporation before the end of the 19th century.

In 1906, engineer Wilhelm Berg, who had previously gained experience in the USA in what was then the new mass production method, took over the management of Gildemeister AG and introduced this production method at the plant in Bielefeld. In the years that followed, the company developed a large number of new machine types and in 1928 was granted a patent for a machine with free chip fall and the design of automatic machines in portal format. This was followed by a long-lasting phase of upswing, so that Gildemeister also survived the economic crisis of the 1930s without too many losses.

The post-war period: innovations and shareholdings

In the post-war period, the company achieved a market-leading position in Europe – among other things with innovations such as the RV 50 turret lathe and the first eight-spindle automatic chucking machine – and also became one of the most important manufacturers of machine tools worldwide. With the investment in the Hamburg machine tool manufacturer Heidenreich & Harbeck in 1970, Gildemeister finally acquired the necessary know-how for the development of CNC-controlled lathes.Shortly thereafter, in 1975, the company introduced the world’s first electronic control system for machine tools as well as the N.E.F. manually numerically controlled lathe.

Gildemeister becomes DMG

As a result of the economic crisis in the 1990s, Gildemeister took over the troubled Deckel Maho AG in 1994, transferred it to the wholly owned subsidiary Deckel Maho GmbH, and gained further know-how for machining centers, universal milling and drilling machines. From this point on, Gildemeister operated under the name DMG (Deckel Maho Gildemeister).

Cooperation with Mori Seiki

A cooperation agreement concluded in 2009 with the Japanese manufacturer Mori Seiki Co. LTD. led to close cooperation between the two major companies in the areas of research, development, production and sales, as well as to the joint international brand presence „DMG/Mori Seiki“.In October 2013, Gildemeister AG finally became DMG MORI SEIKI AG and Mori Seiki Co. LTD became DMG MORI SEIKI COMPANY LIMITED.From now on, the two companies will operate worldwide under the „DMG MORI“ brand. With the deletion of the „Seiki“ from both company names in 2015, they were also aligned, and since then the companies have been operating as DMG MORI AKTIENGESELLSCHAFT and DMG MORI COMPANY LIMITED.
